Howdy,

After watching the rostering video, I started to play around with it and with the filters. I soon realized that most of our players do not have their Date of Birth specified in their SportsEngine profiles. However I know that we capture that into (same for Gender) in our registration forms.

What is the best practice here? Should we not capture this in our registrations but instead require users to specify DOB and Gender in the SE profile? Is there a way to update one from other?

Thanks,
Don.

There's a long way to talk about this... and a short way.... I'll try the shorter version first.

Think of the registration as one big sign up form with a bunch of fields. When a person would fill out the form they would answer a bunch of questions and when they came back next year, they would answer a bunch of questions. These are two different "sessions" and the data is relative to each session. So your phone number in the first session, is not stored in the same way as your phone number in the second session. Even though your phone number is your phone number.

Now, with the new SportsEngine profiles, your phone number is tied to the person, and forms recognize and understand that it's your phone number. So when we (or you) ask for someone's phone number in a registration now, the system looks to their profile and recognizes their phone number and shows that. If they change their phone number in the profile, it updates everywhere across the platform (that's using the profile). It's a pretty sweet system.

Now *** Just realizes this is actually the long answer **

Until your next registration, the profile info will pretty much be blank. Not a problem, you can still get to it in your registration. However, when you set up your next registration, it'll utilize the profile and all of that info will get placed into the profile.

I'm sure this will create questions. Ask away... but I hope it helped clear a few things up about the profile.

So if I'm reading this right, you're saying that registration forms would pull from SE profiles if the data is available? So it would be worthwhile to suggest users provide that info there?

I talked to our association president and registrar and they actually think the DOB on our form was being pulled as part of the USA Hockey number lookup for that player. Have you had anything like this in your hockey assn's registrations?

I wasn't involved in our previous registrations so I can't speak to how it was set up. I'm just trying to make sure we make the most use out of the SportsEngine platform going forward.

It would pull that info if:

1) The registration was set up to utilize the new profile (this is new and being done on registrations moving forward)

2) There is info in the profile from the user. Note: they will enter this most likely the first time they go through a registration utilizing the new profile questions.

OK I'll make sure to point this out with our registrar when we set up the new registration.

Just to clarify, existing users will be asked new profile questions? Or only people creating new profiles for the first time?

I guess technically both would.

When you do your next registration, you'll ask the same questions EX: Gender, and it will utilize the new profile. This will be the same experience for existing profiles as well as anyone who is new.

OK I'll try to make sure I get myself involved when the new registration is set up and see how it's done.
